COLUMBIA, S.C. – Abu Garcia pro Casey Ashley moved into first place on the third day of competition at the Carolina Clash and never looked back, claiming his second B.A.S.S. Elite Series victory. Ashley won the event in his home state of South Carolina, which was held on Lake Murray, S. C., this past weekend.
Ashley squeaked by fellow Abu Garcia pro Michael Iaconelli, who was in a virtual tie with Davy Hite, but in the end it was Ashley who hoisted the trophy and claim the $100,000 check. With his winning bag of 61-Pounds, 3-ounces, the Smith Mountain, S.C., native also stamped his ticket to the 2012 Bassmaster Classic that is set to take place on the Red River.
“This is a big win for me,” said Ashley. “It has been four long years since I won an event, and I missed the Classic last year. I wanted those two streaks to end this year. With this win I can go big every tournament without worries of missing another Classic. Most my bites came on a shaky head with 8-pound Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon spooled on an Abu Garcia Cardinal 804 Spinning reel.”
In addition to the Cardinal 804 spinning reel, Ashley used both the Abu Garcia Revo Premier and Revo STX low profile baitcast reels when he wasn’t finesse fishing.
“The reels worked flawlessly,” said Ashley. “The Cardinal 804 spinning reel is possibly the smoothest reel I’ve felt. I am able to really get some distance in between the fish and my boat, and that means everything when messing with finicky fish.”
The next Elite Series event is set for June 9-12 on the Arkansas River in Little Rock, Ark.
