Winning the FLW Angler of the Year title is about the only title Abu Gacia Pro David Dudley does not own. That ended Sunday as Dudley captured his first FLW Angler of the Year title after a 15-year Angler of the Year drought. Dudley edged Brent Ehrler by a single point to claim the 2008 FLW Tour Angler of the Year during the season’s final event on the Detroit River (Mich.).
The Virginia native came into the event trailing the Angler of the Year race by 60-plus points. Dudley vaulted into the lead with his second-day weight of 17 pounds and 00 ounces. Dudley was declared the winner following Sunday’s weigh in where he was presented a trophy and the winner’s check for $171,000
“It feels good. It feels really good,” Dudley said. “I've been waiting on this for 14 years. I've been in the Top 10 in AOY points most of those years, but I've just never managed to end up on top. I just won AOY, and that's the most prized title amongst fishermen, but I definitely didn't gear my season around that. If you take one tournament at a time and try to win that one tournament, the AOY will fall into place just like it did for me today.
In his 6 FLW Tour tournaments, Dudley had one win, four top 50 appearances and finished 67th in one event.
Dudley is now automatically qualified for the 2008 Forrest Wood Cup to be held in August on South Carolina’s Lake Murray.
