COLUMBIA, S.C. – Relatively speaking, Abu Garcia pro team member Brent Ehler is still a youngster compared to many of his fellow FLW Tour competitors. But since his rookie year in 2005, Ehler has won the Forrest Wood Cup and four FLW Tour tournaments. This past weekend the young angler, from Redlands, Cali., led wire to wire on Lewis Smith Lake in northeast Alabama and earned his fifth FLW win.
Ehler leaned heavily on finesse fishing taunting the early spring bass with wacky rigs and drop shots. He chose the Abu Garcia Premier spinning reel, size 40, for the delicate touch of his light presentations. The end result was four limits in the four-day event, with over 60 pounds brought to the scales. Second place was over seven pounds back. For his efforts Ehler took home the $100,000 top prize.
“Fishing was really tough each day with fewer bites as the tournament continued,” reported Ehler. “I’d mark a fish, mostly spotted bass, on my electronics then drop a wacky rig. The Abu Garcia spinning reel was certainly up to the challenge of handling the three-pound average fish.”
The early lead in the Angler of the Year points gives Ehler the early momentum. Five times Ehler has finished in the top 10 of this prestigious award with two of those being runner up.
