COLUMBIA, S.C. – To say Chris Lane is a patient man is an understatement. The Abu Garcia pro sat behind a two-day leader just waiting for his chance to move into the hot seat. Day four was Lane’s day as he secured the Plano Championship Chase trophy on Lake St. Claire this past weekend. The Guntersville, Ala., native captured the win with his four-day bag of 82-pounds, 4-ounces.
The best part of winning the tournament wasn’t the $100,000 check, but the ticket he officially punched to the 2014 Bassmaster Classic on his home waters of Lake Guntersville. It is safe to say that Lane will be odds on favorite to win his second Classic title come 2014.
To claim victory, Lane was using the Abu Garcia Revo Spinning reels, spooled with Stren fishing line, and an AST All Star rod.
"I could not have done it without my sponsors,” said Lane. "With those sponsors, I felt every bite and was able to get these smallmouth in the boat. This week was not a sprint for me. It was more of a marathon. I sat and waited, knowing that I could pull it off. It just felt like everyone’s weights were dropping but mine. By day four, I knew I had put myself in contention to win another one.”
Next up for the Elite Series is the Sept. 27-29 postseason, the Toyota All-Star Week and Evan Williams Bourbon Championship on Muskegon Lake out of Muskegon, Mich.
Ten of the 14 qualifiers are set. They are the Top 8 from the regular-season Elite points list, the 2013 Classic winner, and the 2013 Rookie of the Year. The remaining four will be picked by fans. Voting online at Bassmaster.com will continue until Sept. 6.
