Ice Fishing for Lake Trout

In-Fisherman

Winter is a fantastic time to catch big lake trout through the ice. This type of fishing often requires mobility as it can take quite a bit of searching to find active lakers. They can roam main-lake basins where they suspend in the water column to feed on open-water baitfish. Focus on specific areas likely to hold lake trout, including sunken reefs, bars, shoals, and underwater points. Another good spot is the confined open water in an inside turn or bend where lakers herd schools of baitfish. Top presentation options include jigging with softbaits, like 3- to 4-inch tubes or curlytail grubs on 1/4- to 3/4-ounce jigheads, depending on the depth. Natural baitfish colors (white, silver, pearl) are good colors.
