A MUST HAVE!!!! I bought this reel about a year ago and it was my 2nd baitcast reel I had owned. My first was a Pfleuger Monarch ($35). It was not a good reel at all so i decided to go for a higher price range, hoping for a better quality reel. Well folks, I found it! This reel has fought well over 250 fish over the course of its life and performs the same as it did the first time I used it. I love the way the reel handles heavy bass and will cast a light lure a long way. Abu, ya'll were not kidding when you said "For Life"! The Black Max led me to buy the Pro Max and the Revo S, both great reels as well. Keep it up Abu Garcia! May 5, 2013

New to baitcaster My first cast was a disaster. Had to cut out the birdsnest. I got on u-tube after that and got into a lot of videos. Armed with that information I did really well. The straight overhead cast was by far the hardest to learn. I viewed a video that said to turn the reel 90 degrees to the ground when casting overhead. That solved the problem. The sidearm cast is much easier to begin with. I think Abu Garcia should include instructions on how to set it up for us Newbees. Im really glad I listened to the salesman at Dicks who recommened the combo with the vengeance rod as good for a beginner. I'm ready to move from the back yard to the river! If you are new to baitcasting don't trash Abu Garcia if things don't go well at the beginning. It really does work well. You just need some patience, instruction, and practice. The only fault I see is the lack of an instruction manual. I couldn't find one on their website either. May 4, 2013

Bait casting Virgin This is my first bait casting reel, and after much research I decided to by the Black max. The Cost wa a factor and well it is a very sharp looking Reel. I followed the directions for setting the drag and it worked like a charm. I Took it fishing today and was very Very impressed byt the lack of Backlash. ( had a few) But over all it is a fantastic casting reel and the learning curve was small. I have had great luck with Abu Garcia products and Even convinced my Fishing buddy who said he shys away for the back lash reason. I was casting a great distance and a very smooth retrieve. I loaded it up wwith 30 lbs Spider wire Stealth Braid. This will be come my new favorite. Good Job Guys, your R&D folks need a atta boy for this one. April 20, 2013

Last about 5 years I purchased two of these reels (Black Max) approx. 5 years ago. One of them just quit on me. The spoil started going the opposite direction last saturday. Its hard to real in a bass when the spoil won't spin in the right direction. Overall, it was a good reel, just not durable or reliable when used a lot. If you're a professional or local club amature bass fisherman, spend some more money for a better reel. This is my only experience with Adu Garica. My next purchase will be a trustie Curado. I give the reel a overall rating of average for fisherman that only fish 5 to 10 times a year. April 12, 2013
